Perimenopause Skin Changes & Natural Skincare

Perimenopause Skin Changes & Natural Skincare

A buzzword for the 2020s… perimenopause. Or maybe I’m just noticing it more because of my age… but it’s actually wonderful that this is being talked about more and helping to normalize what happens with women’s health.

I believe we are all responsible for our own health—understanding when something feels off and knowing when to advocate for ourselves. Coming from a nursing background, I feel strongly that we need to learn about our bodies, understand how they work, and be better prepared for the changes that come with different stages of life.

What is perimenopause anyways?

Most people talk about menopause and how “awful” it is… but menopause is actually a single-day event. It marks the one-year anniversary of your last menstrual cycle. So the whole time leading up to menopause is a transitional time called perimenopause. When it begins for each woman differs, but usually in their 40s- sometimes as early as late 30s.

Perimenopause can bring about a lot of changes to a woman’s body. When I read the list- it feels like it’s pretty much everything. Hormonal changes/fluctuations, mood and cognitive changes, sleep disruption, headaches, UTIs, weight gain, hot flashes, increased muscle/joint pain… I feel like I should stop, because just reading the list can be overwhelming. But for this blog, I want to focus on one area that doesn’t get talked about enough: skin changes during perimenopause.

Our skin can—and often does—change significantly during perimenopause and after menopause.

Hormonal shifts can cause the skin to become:

  • Drier

  • Thinner

  • Less elastic

  • More sensitive

  • Uneven in tone and texture

You may also notice increased signs of sun damage. Lovely, right?

And when you live on the dry prairies and experience our cold winters, it can feel like a triple whammy working against your skin.

We kept these skin changes in mind when formulating our skin care. As skin becomes drier, more sensitive, and less elastic, it needs support—not harsh treatments.

When to seek support

First of all, know that if you are experiencing drastic changes in your body and it’s affecting your quality of life and symptoms are problematic- then please seek help. There are clinics around that specialize in women’s health and can help you. There’s a lot of amazing professionals out there who are passionate about making a difference. In Red Deer, Alberta I can recommend Elle Physio and The Menopause Clinic.

How we approach our natural skincare

This stage of life was something we kept in mind when formulating our skincare.

We’ve thoughtfully chosen ingredients that support changing skin as we age. Ingredients like:

  • Rosehip seed oil

  • Ceramides (which our skin naturally loses over time, affecting elasticity)

  • Helichrysum oil

  • Bakuchiol (a gentle, plant-based alternative to retinol)

  • Blue tansy oil

  • Jojoba oil

I could go on… but you get the idea.

These ingredients help support:

  • The skin barrier

  • Deep hydration and moisture retention

  • Calming and reducing inflammation

  • Antioxidant protection and repair

  • Gentle cell turnover

We don’t support the term “anti-aging.”

I don’t like the idea of fighting something that is inevitable, or the suggestion that aging is something negative. It isn’t. Aging is a gift. It’s a normal part of being human. And if we can learn to embrace the different seasons of life, I think we can find more contentment in the process.

We want to provide products that can support your skin through every season of life. Just natural, handmade, high quality products that help what your skin needs.
